Spend some time working in a rescue...
Spend some time reading the group before posting... you would see that
this group is not supoprtive of breeding and not the place to ask for
this help.

Sorry if you were offended, but many of us are offended by breeding. If
they are beloved pets, they should be spayed/neutered and in the home.
Not making babies to sell or give away that take homes from neglected
shelter bunnies.

I have never met a "typical rabbit breeder" every one I have met says
their bunnies are their pets... but they still sell or give away the
babies. Stress them out taking them to shows etc...

:'(

oh boy... But, if that is the case, why were you asking about something
that would fill in forms for shows??

I am not going any further into this conversation...

Breeding is Breeding.

Please take your daughter to a shelter for dumped rabbits to give her a
more even view of things.

we have an open show during fair so we take our other rabbits to stay with
our other rabbits. so we have them all together in one place so we don't
have to go back in forth to feed them and it is a teedis form and i wish not
to fill it out.

Carrie, this is because 4-H kids often do small-scale breeding,
including going to 4-H and ARBA shows. These kids are not the breeder
mills that you people deservedly attack, and are good potential
sources for pets because they develop lines with good temperments, are well-handled, and durable.

How about developing some perspective for 4-H kids?

The OP is correct in that many 4-H kids view their broodstock as pets.
4-H showing requires a knowledgable handling
component--Showmanship--which requires the handler to safely do things
that some APR folks say they can't do with their pets without
resorting to elaborate handling techniques, such as show teeth,
examine toenails, check scent glands, put bunny on it's back without
freaking out, carry bunny safely, and handle unfamiliar bunnies of a
breed that they may not own--which could mean that someone with a
Netherland Dwarf has to handle a Rex, or an English Lop, or a French
Lop.

The average 4-H rabbit kid is a more knowledgable handler of rabbits
than the typical pet owner, whether the 4-H kid is a breeder or, like
my son, only a pet owner. The 4-H rabbit kid *must* clean their
rabbit's scent glands and clip toenails before each show, not just for
Showmanship rabbits, but for all rabbits they take to a show (all 4-H
rabbits are health checked before show and those are two components of
the health check). Note that these kids are clipping their own
rabbits' toenails, not taking them to the vet to be trimmed.

Many 4-H participants end up doing a *lot* of rescue work that
rescuers may not be aware of, just because the general public sees
someone with rabbits as a source for disposing of unwanted pets. Many
show *breeders* end up doing rescue work, primarily because at least
the more thoughtful pet owners who need to dump rabbits go to shows to
ask about a new home for their rabbits rather than dump them off at a
shelter. Not always, though...there's been a few times when someone
dumps off a bunny in a cage. I have heard my share of rescue horror
stories from breeders as well, though--some to match Ronie's.

Rather than alienating all sectors of the rabbit ownership population,
as some tend to do, we all need to think about putting the rabbits
first--especially here in the US, where we have extreme reactions by
the authorities to VHD (yes, I'd like to have access to vaccination!).
Pet owners attacking breeders and breeders attacking pet owners is
irresponsible behavior, no matter what.
