Default PHP software for site of club

Is there a freeware PHP package for a site of a local cultural
association, which offers the following:

- simple user interface
- easy to upload new content: schedules, programs for the next few
months, announcements, newsletters
- there are every now and then events. Photos are taken and it should be
easy to set up photo galleries about these events.
- Would be cool if everything was interlinked: you add an event to the
calendar with a description, then you have the option of sending an
invitation to all members by email, once the event is over you add the
photo gallery of the event. Events can be gatherings, meetings, outdoor
activities etc.
- periodic newsletters sent to members
- members database (this is nice to have, not essential)
- forum (also nice to have, not essential)
- search engine friendly

The current site of the club is here:
http://www.malaysiaclubbayern.de/

It has been done manually mainly with Frontpage. I'm taking it over now
and was wondering if there is something more sophisticated which
automates the process of content management and generation and offers a
better user interface.

basically you need a cms for that type of functionality.

read about the cms packages available and pick one from here:

http://opensourcecms.com/

i recommend joomla or drupal.

Look into groupserver.org. It's not PHP, but Python. It's very good though.

I downloaded joomla and will give it a try. Hopefully it's not overkill.

A snake or an object-oriented scripting language. Take your pick.

I gave a try to Joomla. But it does not have a photo gallery
functionality (i.e. attach photo galleries to events), has no forum, and
members cannot upload content. Or did I miss something?

If Joomla indeed does not offer these functionalities which other
package does?
