Councilman killed in NY City Hall shooting

Crime crusader Councilman James Davis was shot dead.

NEW YORK (CNN) - City Councilman James Davis, D-Brooklyn,
a former police officer known as a crusader against urban
violence, was killed Wednesday in a shooting at New
York's City Hall, Manhattan Borough President C. Virginia
Fields told CNN.

Davis headed "LOVE YOURSELF" Stop the Violence, a non-
profit organization he founded in 1990. Among other
efforts, the group in 1994 convinced Toys 'R' Us to stop
selling realistic-looking toy guns. Davis was elected to
the New York City Council in November 2001.

The gunman died after being shot by a police bodyguard
for the city council speaker, a police source told CNN.

Councilman Charles Barron, who represents Brooklyn, told
CNN the shooter seemed to be targeting an individual,
walking along the balcony without saying a word, shooting
downward.

When the shots rang out, Barron said, "It was panic. It
was bedlam. It was chaos," with papers flying in the air
as people on the main floor scrambled for safety. "People
were panicking and had scared looks on their faces. Some
were screaming and crying."

Manhattan Councilwoman Gale Brewer was caught up in the
melee.

"We dove under our desks and we were piled on top of each
other because so many of us had never experienced
something like this," she said.

Soon, everyone was trying to escape, she said.

"We were running really fast. People were tripping, they
were falling -- they were even falling over the line in
front of the guard rail. And then we ran down into the
rotunda of the City Hall and then we were told by the
police to run even further. People were jumping over the
fence that is in City Hall parking lot to get out into
the street," she said.

Several council members said they believed the shooter
was shot and fell to the ground after he fired multiple
shots at a council member.

Two people were carried out on stretchers. A Fire
Department of New York spokesman said two were
transported to NYU Hospital in Lower Manhattan.

Given the additional security precautions implemented
following the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, it
was unclear how someone could have gotten into the
building with a gun. . . .

now, this is as close to home as it can get for the lawmakers.
lawmakrs oughta grab this opportunity, and make a law that would stop sale
of guns in USA for 10 years, and give $5000.00/ per every gun turned in to
police by gun owners, pull troops outa iraq and deploy them on NYC streets.
This incentive will be cheaper in the long run than handling the aftermath
of killings (eg, the enormous hospital costs that have bankrupted medicare,
depriving decent folks of decent care).
