Larry D. Thompson, the No. 2 official at the Department of Justice,
plans to announce tomorrow that he is stepping down to return to the
private sector, government sources said yesterday.
Thompson is joining a stream of top Justice officials who have
announced their departures this summer after nearly two years of
grueling hours devoted to preventing acts of terrorism after the Sept.
11, 2001, attacks on New York and the Pentagon.
He has signed on for a six-month stint with the Brookings Institution.
In addition to his daily involvement in the department's stepped-up
efforts to uncover terrorist threats, Thompson has also headed the
corporate crime task force pursuing prosecutions against industry
giants including Enron Corp., Worldcom Inc. and HealthSouth Corp.
The deputy attorney general had been a partner in the Atlanta law firm
of King & Spalding.
He is best known in Washington for being an adviser and a witness for
Clarence Thomas during his contentious Senate confirmation hearings to
become a Supreme Court justice.
Thompson, 57, is one of the Bush administration's highest-ranking
African American political appointees.
