Lahore - For each one of the passengers on the Delhi-
Lahore bus service, Sada-e-Sarhad, Lahore holds a
different memory and a unique experience that they are
likely to remember for times to come.
The journey that started with overcast skies and stormy
weather at 4 am on Friday morning at Delhi's Ambedkar
terminal came to an equally dramatic end at 8.30 pm at
the Faletti Hotel in Lahore.
Rarely has so common a means of transport created such
excitement. If there were those who were aboard the bus
for mere business purposes, there were others whose
stories pulled heart strings.
Take for example the unbridled pride on Zahoor Sabah's
face when she handed her four-and-a-half month old baby
to her journalist husband for the first time. Jaipur-born
Sabah was married in Lahore and sees it as a city that
has given her a life different from those candy floss
''The impression that there are restrictions in Lahore
and Pakistan are false. I never felt that I had to adjust
to the surroundings because I was in Pakistan and not in
India,'' she said, cradling her child.
For others like Vijendra and Vinod Kumar, the trip to
Lahore has been an adventure. The two are service
engineers from Sonipat and are looking forward to 12 days
of hard work. ''We travel 20 days in a month and this
would have been just another trip, but for the welcome
that we received at every halt,'' Vinod Kumar said.
There are of course others for whom Lahore is just a
stopover. Abdul Quayaam Wari, 40, has travelled many
miles to reach Delhi from Srinagar and will continue to
''There should be a direct bus from Srinagar. Why should
we suffer, not be able to meet our relatives and friends
for so many years. These man-made barriers just create
more problems,'' Wari added. Driver Sher Singh seems to
have a similar opinion about the bus service. Singh has
been one of the few to be associated with the bus since
its first trial run in 1999.
