Iraq - History Lessons for the Leftists
And thus begins another recitation of one of the stupidest arguments
for war with Iraq: that 2003 Iraq was just like 1939 Germany, and
therefore war was necessary and just.
In fairness, a similarly stupid argument is made against the war: that
2003 Iraq is just like 1965 Vietnam, and therefore we can only expect
drawn-out guerilla war and boatloads of bodybags before being forced
to withdraw.
In reality, anyone with a high school history class under their belt
should be able to see that Iraq is not Germany, and it is not Vietnam.
In Germany, the population was decimated and war-weary after years of
fighting a war they themselves had instigated, and it was pretty
apparent that a rogue government that had seized power a decade
earlier was responsible for one of the worst tragedies in history.
That was a nation ripe for change. (Of course, that change was a long
time in coming - East Germany, anyone?)
In Iraq, by comparison, a few thousands bombs were dropped,
disorganizing and scattering the official resistance, and a relatively
conservative Muslim people suddenly woke up one morning to find that
the only authority they had ever known had been replaced by white,
beer-drinking, ****-watching, cross-worshipping infidels. Worse,
those infidels were set against any attempt to inaugurate a respected
cleric as the new leader, and instead decided they'd be setting up
camp indefinitely while they pumped oil out of the country to pay
their fees and costs.
Yep... there are certainly differences. Hell, Iraq may look less like
Germany in 1945 than like France in 1941 - a puppet government being
controlled by an invasionary force, with the word "resistance" (say it
with a flourish) on everyone's lips.
