Indigenous drinkers turning to mouthwash

MOUTHWASH is the latest problem drink among Alice Springs' indigenous
population, authorities say.

Mayor Fran Kilgariff said Alice Springs Council's outdoor workers were
picking up a lot of Listerine bottles during collections.

This was despite the alcohol in Listerine, a popular brand of
mouthwash, being deliberately made unpalatable by the manufacturer.

"Our outdoor workers are reporting they're picking up a lot more empty
Listerine bottles when they do litter collection," Ms Kilgariff said.

"It certainly seems to be a problem."

Indigenous Affairs Minister Mal Brough was unavailable for comment and
a spokeswoman for Health Minister Tony Abbott said the health minister
would need more than anecdotal information before commenting.

Opposition indigenous affairs spokeswoman Jenny Macklin called on the
Government to immediately research the extent of the problem.

"First of all we have got to find out the extent of the problem and
then look at ways it can be addressed," Ms Macklin said.

"It really is a serious concern."

Ms Macklin pointed to the successful rollout of Opal "non-sniffable"
fuel among indigenous communities where petrol-sniffing had been a
problem.

"We know that there's been successful efforts at reduction in alcohol
consumption ... and of course the roll out of Opal fuel has helped
address another serious form of addiction."

myself and roled up to this broken down car in my Kombi.
The guys were half deformed, with eyes popping out of their head from
petrol sniffing. In the middle of ****ing nowhere. Desert. Tyres
stuffed with praire grass.
Exhaust made of coke cans, no windows, no petrol. These were the Bush
