Hate to say it, but a west-coast American friend of mine living in Australia
has come to disparaging his compatriots, in view of such news stories, as
"dumb, corn-fed f***s" and "wankers" (great Aussie epithet, I think you
understand it). A bit strong, but I know where he's coming from. The
average Yank has become a lazy, over-indulged whiner, having inflated
expectations and sense of rights, shedding her or his responsibility, and
always blaming others - the last a perennial human trait glorified under
U.S. feminism. Unfortunately, there's a large moral and cultural
"lumproletariat" (and not necessarily the traditional blue-collar classes)
of Australians and Brits lumbering right up there behind them. You only
have to watch TV and read the newspapers to pick up the drift of
contemporary thinking, and its sets of denials and delusions.
