SYPHILIS RATE INCREASING

Does mankind ever learn? Apparently not. The horrible, ***ually
transmitted disease, syphilis, which was so rampant in Victorian times
and which was thought to have been all but eradicated, has reappeared
in Canada and the US in all its ugliness. Such disparate individuals
as US gangster Al Capone, and Lord Randolph Churchill, father of Sir
Winston Churchill, both died of the loathsome disease, which is now
acquiring fresh victims.

By the mid-1990s, Canada's national syphilis infection rate had
slipped to a negligible 0.5% per 100,000 population. In 2001, however,
it suddenly rose to 1.1% per 100,000 population and is rising.
According to the December 2002 issue of the Canadian Medical
Association Journal, the rate, especially among men between 20 - 24
years of age, has increased four-fold in the past five years. The
syphilis outbreak has occurred mainly in the homo***ual population,
not only in Canada, but also in the US where the US Centers for
Disease Control (CDS) report that syphilis had increased 15% in that
population in 2001, and according to the New York Times, the incidence
of syphilis rose 55% in 2002 primarily among the homo***ual
population.

This increase in syphilis, according to both US and Canadian
authorities, is due to "condom fatigue" among homo***uals caused by a
reduced fear of AIDS, based on the mistaken belief that the disease
can be cured with today's "miracle drugs". It cannot.

That is, the so-called safe-*** message is falling on deaf ears. More
and more homo***uals are seeking out partners willing to engage in
risky ***ual behaviour; they frequently find their *** partners in
cyberspace, an anonymous location in which to find willing partners to
engage in all types of ***. Two years ago in San Francisco, public
health authorities tracked an outbreak of syphilis to one single chat
room for *** men.

Not only is the use of chat rooms on the internet leading to more
syphilis, it is the catalyst for other problems as well. For example,
a 34-year old Ottawa homo***ual, Christopher Raynsford, was murdered
in December 2002 by someone he met on an internet chat line and
invited home. He had used a homo***ual website which is an online
dating service based in San Francisco - a site which claims to have
over one million members world-wide.

Unlike Victorian times, today, if caught early, syphilis is easily
curable by antibiotic treatment. However, if left untreated, it can
lead to psychiatric illness, stroke, chronic meningitis or diseases of
the heart, including the bursting of the aorta. People can also
develop disfiguring, erosive skin and bone disease. If left untreated,
it remains an absolutely horrendous disease.

Syphilis is almost always transmitted by ***ual contact spreading from
a canker or ulcer of an infected person to the mucous membrane of an
uninfected partner.

Dr. Mary Gordon, Medical Director of the ***ual Health Centre and the
Associate Medical Officer of Health for the City of Ottawa, which has
had to deal with 18 new cases of syphilis in the homo***ual population
in Ottawa since January 2001, has a simple message, quoted in Capital
Xtra, Feb. 18, 2003:

It's simple. It's the number of partners you have, as well as condom
use. It's just a matter of saying, 'My chance of getting an infection
is greater because I have three partners and not just one, and
therefore I should look after my health.

Will her homo***ual audience listen? Not likely, since her message
will interfere with the pleasures they expect from their promiscuous
lifestyle.
