Does anyone know of a freeware win32 text file search/replace utility
that can do global search/replace from the command line?

For example something like:

c:> program foo.bar "old string" "new string"

where "program" is the program name, foo.bar is file name in which
all occurrences of "old string" are replaced with "new string"

I have a old program called MiniTrue that does this, but it has
problems with LFNs. Does anyone know of another freeware that could do
this?

The reason I ask this here is that you guys are pretty knowledgeable
about command line utilities.

If it were just a question of global search I'd hawk my own GREP at
you. But for search and replace you probably want SED.

with 4DOS / 4NT you could use the %@replace function, as long as your
needs aren't too fanciful.

and no line in the files contains characters which have syntactical
significance to the command processor (after you use SETODS /X to disable
all you can).

Thanks for the suggestion, but this is for a XP system without
4dos/4nt on although I could put 4dos freeware on it, but that's not
what I want to do.

Some people in alt.comp.freeware suggested GSAR located at

http://gnuwin32.sourceforge.net/packages/gsar.htm

which does what I need. It's a nice utility.

I use TextPipe Web (www.searchandreplace.net) but it's not freeware.
