Default FileMaker 8 is out!

I still have an old complaint : ie the impossibility to address the
function keys from a script line.
Those functions keys have been existing for 10 years or more ... Why
ignore them ?

As 42 correctly clarified, FM8 Advanced is the new name for Developer, not
to be confused with Server Advanced, which I haven't got yet. And I've had
it a while because I've been beta testing it, but haven't been able to
disclose any info on it up until now, I had an NDA with FileMaker.

The version of 8 that I had a look at had tabbed layouts which was
great until you tried to do something upon switching from 1 tab to
another. You couldn't attach a script to the tab and I didn't see a
script command that said "Go To Tab#..."; meaning you can't apply any
security to the different tabs. What's so great about this?

I spend 80% of my time in Script Maker where I often have to use the
application "Grab" on OS X to take a picture of a script because I need
to add similar script steps to a different script. The highly educated
design team at FileMaker gives me the ability to copy fields from 1
table to another (yes, I will use this) BUT where is copy & paste in
scripts?

As far as the relationship graph goes, the version I saw allowed me to
put coloured rectangle as a background in the graph and then put my
table occurrences on it as a way to group them, AND I could type some
text on the rectangle. Give me a text version of this any day!

As far as the upside is concerned, I did see a very useful thing which
hasn't been mentioned; the ability to transfer my found set of records
into another window.

All in all I have to agree with most people, the added features are an
improvement, but the real reason to update is in the hopes that this
version is going to be supported until it's bug free.
If FileMaker releases version 9 without doing that, then in my books,
I'll put them at the same level as Microsoft.

This looks more like it should be a version 7.3.
Perhaps its just me, but I don't see anything here to get excited
about.
There is STILL no way of calling a script to perform data validation
upon entering and exiting a field without using 3rd party plugins. No
mention of instant web publishing improvements.
Export as Excel? We already have export as csv that is really the same
thing. Is there any additional script step or fuctions?

On 30/8/05 22:06, in article
1125435963.463013.273150@o13g2000cwo.googlegroups. com, "FP"

The way I've done it is to create a field for each tab, and put it on the
layout but make it invisible and put it behind something and do:

Go to Layout [Layout with tabs]
Go To Field (LayoutName_Tab2)
Go To Field ()

Works fine but not ideal or secure.

Did you try to build a standalone application? What's its size?

FMP6 standalones where much, much smaller than FMP7. What's the
footprint of a very basic 'one field only' dummy database?

Thanks,
Martin

What makes you feel this could happen?

They made that much wrong, moving to FMP7, that I feel they work exactly
like Microsoft nowadays.

Do you by any chance know whether ActiveX is supported by the runtimes made
with FM8 Advanced ?

Thanks,

Peter

A single DB called Untitled, with a single field called Test, with no data
in it, bound with the only option being create as runtime, returns 49MB,
consisting 10.6MB of Dictionaries in the extensions folder, FMP
Acknowledgements.PDF is 44KB, the Untitled application is 38.3MB, and
Untitled.USR is 56KB.
