simple question I can't find answer for

I use _The MS-DOS Encyclopedia_ for a starting point. Clearly it leaves
something to be desired WRT long file names and other changes that have been
made over the years. I believe the copy I have was written for MS-DOS 3.3,
it has 1570 big pages and weighs about eight pounds. The best source on
the Windows API is _Programming Windows xx_ where xx varies with time, by
Charles Petzold. This is for the stuff that isn't grandfathered in from
DOS, although you speak of Windows you seem to actually be trying to do DOS
stuff. Be sure to keep that separation straight. You will be happier in a
DOS (perhaps Windows) newsgroup, try variants of the spelling of MSDOS,
MS-DOS, DOS, etc.
Note that the C and C++ languages do not recognize that directories even
*exist*. I wouldn't expect Linux tutorials to be any more helpful than to
you than the ones you already have for Haskell and Ruby.
