Jürgen,

Because the SPAM "camp" is winning the battle against
the "anti-SPAM" camp this month.

;-)

The SPAM comes from two sources ...

email: info-ingres@cariboulake.com
news: comp.databases.ingres

Because Caribou Lake is discontinuing operations at the
year's end, the email list will get to start "fresh" somewhere
else. I am still willing to host the list under the Kettle River
Consulting domain, but the result will be similar. After a
while, SPAM will creep back in.

Anyone who thinks they have the time to manually moderate
the list or thinks they could do a better job hosting it, PLEASE
step forward now, as this would be the best time to get all
the disruption over with at once.

But I'm afraid that there is no way to prevent SPAM on the
news (USENET) side of the list. The very architecture of
news was designed for cooperative collaboration. Unfortunately
that invites the worst along with the best ...

Cheers,

Mike Leo

Because there's more spam generally recently. I read somewhere that it's
because spammers have taken to using botnets - which has both increased
capacity and evaded some anti-spam measures. The arms race continues...

Hi Jean-Pierre,

forgive me please, but in no way would I refer to your mail as
spam. It wasn't ! And I read your post with much interest. This is
true for any poster on this list talking about databases, Ingres
and things like that. However controversial and sometimes emotional.
I think it should stay that way.

Michael: you are right that spam is hard to fight. Sometimes mails are
indicated as such, I value your work doing that. You mention that
"Caribou Lake" will be discontinued by year's end. Please let me/us know
where the discussion about Ingres will continue !

Paul: I'm using a spam filter that every other time tells me an Ingres
mail is junk when it isn't. Or doesn't when it is. So annoying, however,
yes, the number of spam mails here is low compared to the many other
sources.

But the number has increased considerably in the last weeks, that was
the initial reason for my "complaint".

Cheers to all of you !

Jürgen

[clip]

I am working towards a solution that would transfer the
list to a new list server. If I cannot get this in place easily
by December, I will inform the list that we need to find a
resource.

If there is anyone who has a reliable news server that allows
you to gateway a mailing list to, let me know.

I have another MailMan server in place at Kettle River (a new
company I'm now working with) and I could move the entire
list to that site.

No matter what, by year's end, we will need to change the
address of the info-ingres list.

Cheers,

Mikey
