Default How to use Lynx to access USENET with Dos or Windows?

Hi,

I downloaded Lynx 2.8.2 from
http://www.fdisk.com/doslynx/wlynx/lynx_w32.2.8.2rel.1.zip . It seems to
work properly on Windows in a Dos window for the web, gopher, ftp and so
on, and I can read messages using nntp://hostort/newsgroup. However,
when I try to post a message with
newspost://news.numericable.fr:119/fr.test , after having filled the
required fields, including the message body, I get a "Alert!: 441
article has no body -- just headers"; and something more afterwards I
cannot read (displayed too fast) and finally no message is posted.
Worse, I didn't understand how to handle properly lynx.cfg (and the link
pointing to the explanation about this file is broken all I could find
is
http://lynx.isc.org/lynx2.8.5/lynx2-8-5/lynx_help/lynx_url_support.html
), so any help would be more than welcome.

Also, I wonder if there's another newsreader available for Dos. AFAIK,
Arachne ( http://www.cisnet.com/glennmcc/ ) doesn't support netnews yet,
but if there's another option, preferably free, I'd pleased to learn about.

TIA.

PS: Crosspost to news:alt.os.free-dos , news:news.software.newsreaders ,
copy and fu2 news:comp.os.msdos.mail-news

Do you mean for *real* DOS or, as in your test, for in a 'DOS window'
under (MS-)Windows?

Since you crossposted to alt.os.free-dos, I assume the former. If so,
have a look at YARN. YARN is a SOUP-based off-line reader, so you need a
'SOUPer', a program which gets and sends SOUP packets from/to a News
server. I have no pointers for the latter.

If you want a newsreader for a 'DOS window' under (MS-)Windows, then
have a look at slrn and tin (see my User-Agent header).

For all newsreaders, see *the* newsreaders site, NewsReaders
(<http://www.newsreaders.com>).

It's news.software.readers, not news.software.newsreaders. I have
corrected that. And I've ignored the Followup-To: because
comp.os.msdos.mail-news is a very low volume group and *the* newsreaders
group, also/'even' for DOS is news.software.newsreaders.

Here in comp.os.msdos.mail-news,
Frank Slootweg <this@ddress.is.invalid> spake unto us, saying:

I'm not sure that a DOS version of Souper exists, but Yarn can be made
to work with UKA_PPP.

It's been awhile since I did news with Lynx.
I set the news server in lynx.cfg (NNTPSERVER=) then
nntp:// by itself to get a list of groups (I was trying to get to
alt.test directly but found out it didn't exist so via the list I
found misc.test).

I selected to post a message and vim (my editor) came up with
headers filled in, went to the bottom and entered in some text.
Saved and posted. Few minutes later I checked back with Lynx
and the message was there.

Don't know if the problem has to do with the editor and its saving of
the message in a temp directory or something else.
It's been awhile.

That said, I'm not in DOS but WinXP. My DOS Internet days got
severely sidetracked with the loss of my DOS-only machine
awhile back.
Check the URL below for some other DOS-based newsreaders.
Back in the day I used to use Minuet and Nettamer but really it's
been a long time. --

begin oe_protect.scr
Stegozor <stegozor@removethis.altern.org.invalid> espoused:

There's an example .cfg file here:

http://lynx.isc.org/release/lynx2-8-5/lynx.cfg

It's very well commented, so you should be able to make some sense of
it.

Here you can find an online man page for lynx:
http://www.linux-tutorial.info/modules.php?name=ManPage&sec=1&page=lynx

It's a bit cryptic, and not all the options will be dos relevant, but it
should help.

Well, I made some progress with Lynx: If you're using a Dos window in
Windows, you should get the following version which has an _installer_:
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.jp/lynx-win32-pata/19739/Lynx286dev17TH.exe
It worked quite fine (including newsgroup posting) and that without
having to configure the lynx.cfg file. More information at:
http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.comp.web.lynx.devel/4326/focus=4351

The debian package downloaded from usual Ubuntu GNU/Linux repositories
also worked quite fine. I couldn't test pure DOS version so far, but
this will come sooner or later as well, especially now that FreeDos 1.0
has been released

Thanks to all who have replied.
