I'm looking for a way to play a wav file through a program i'm writing under
dos? any examples or code that i could be pointed towards
playing a wav using c++ in dos (audio newbie) Thanks for any advice/help

You could have a look at Allegro, for 32-bit compilers (DJGPP, Watcom).
If you feel lucky, you could try "Allegro" on Google. If you don't feel
so lucky, try <http://www.talula.demon.co.uk/allegro/>.
Should be fairly straight-forward.

Or you could try "I'm Feeling Lucky" on Google for "16-bit c++ sound"
for sound for 16-bit compilers.

This may not be so straightforward.

*** I'm not a programmer, but could you have your c++ program call a
..wav utility like "PLANY"? I have a sound effects setup done via a DOS
batch file. It uses PLANY to play the .wav sounds.

A lot of cards claim to be "SoundBlaster Compatible", these cards
are often emulated under dos as some sort of legacy device..
Allegro is worth having a look at (likethe other guy said).
You'll either need some sort of sound library,
or a method of interfacing with an existing device driver.

Last (and I mean last), resort is writing a device driver yourself.
