Default junk files appearing in /tmp

On one of my machines, there appears to be loads of files appearing in /tmp
named as file******, where ****** appears to be a random sequence of
characters. For example file0lhU8g,file7yk7Ii,fileDZvbBk, etc.

These files all belong to, and are readable and writable only by root.

As root, I cat the contents of these, and they contain loads of entries
similar to those below:

mysql-bin.000281 141
mysql-bin.000282 141
mysql-bin.000283 141

I guess that mysql is the package generating these, but why is it doing this?

I installed mysql a while ago, but I haven't started using it for anything yet.

Mark.

On my machine those file are sockets, and thus cat'ing doesn't really work
too well.

I also have a few auto****** files, I believe from autofs, a few
AcroNNN****** files, from, I believe, the acroread Firefox plugin, a few
ssh-****** files, from ssh/sshd, and a few more tmp files...
