Default Free Microsoft C++ compiler

Hello All,

Microsoft has made their C++ command-line compiler freely available:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/visualc/vctoolkit2003/

(reported on Slashdot).

For SmartEiffel users this could imply that they now can write .net
applications because they say:

Microsoft .NET Framework Common Language Runtime. Visual C++ can
optionally build applications that target the Common Language
Runtime (CLR).

Thanks Berend.

Has any body tried it with ISE EIffel ? I just installed it, then ISE
5.4, and tried creating the sample app. I get this:

Preparing C compilation...
big_file_C9_c.c
c:\eiffel\Eiffel54\studio\spec\windows\include\eif _main.h(19) : fatal
error C108
3: Cannot open include file: 'windows.h': No such file or directory
NMAKE : fatal error U1077: 'C:\WINNT\system32\cmd.exe' : return code
'0x2'
Stop.
NMAKE : fatal error U1077: 'C:\WINNT\system32\cmd.exe' : return code
'0x2'
Stop.

Fair enough, there's no windows.h at C:\Program Files\Microsoft
Visual C++ Toolkit 2003\include

So, what gives ??

Thanks,

marcio

IIUC, you'll need to download as well the SDKs (there are different ones
for Win32 and for .NET)

I tried http://www.microsoft.com/msdownload/platformsdk/sdkupdate/ ,
the Downloads->Install menu. Here's what I get:

Error: “An earlier version of msxml3.dll has been detected on your
system....” SDK Update requires Msxml3.dll SP2 or greater on your system.
Unfortunately, Msxml3.dll SP2 is no longer available for download and SDK
Update does not work with Msxml3 SP4, which is the version currently
available for download. Until this issue is resolved, the work around is to
use the full download option for SDK Update:
http://www.microsoft.com/msdownload/platformsdk/sdkupdate/psdk-full.htm.

So, I am forced to download 342,000,000 bytes. Ok, I went to
http://www.microsoft.com/msdownload/platformsdk/sdkupdate/psdk-full.htm
then. Guess what ? The links to the CABs do not work either !!!

The system cannot find the path specified.

Ideas ?

Only two but that 'briliant':

1) Get a Msxml3.dll SP2 or SP3 from another computer you can have access to;

2) see if a friend of yours already downloaded the huge stuff and can
burn a CD for you.

Other than that, perhaps contacting your local Microsoft office and
asking for buying a CD from them. . .

You'll need the Platform SDK, which is a separate download.

You can find it here:
http://www.microsoft.com/msdownload/platformsdk/sdkupdate/default.htm?p=/msdownload/platformsdk/sdkupdate/home.htm

I tried another one for now: reporting the broken links to them. Let's
see what happens.

Thanks,
