Default Apache2 and PHP4 load error - help requird

Ah, the struggles of converting over to linux continue... such an epic saga.

Here's the deal. I completely removed all the apache/php libraries and
apps off my system, and installed *only* the files required to operate
Apache2 and PHP4 off the SuSE 8.2 cd's (this is to minimize confusion).
I then patched them using YOU. I then modified my
/etc/apache2/httpd.conf file to include the following:

_________________________________________________
# PHP
AddType application/x-httpd-php .php
Include /etc/apache2/conf.d/mod_php4.conf
LoadModule php4_module /usr/lib/apache2-prefork/libphp4.so
_________________________________________________

So far, hey heeeeeey, so good. However, unfortunately, when I attempt
to start the server, I get the following (unhelpful-to-a-newb error):

_________________________________________________

/usr/sbin/apache2ctl: line 103: 27100 Segmentation fault $HTTPD
${httpd_conf+-f $httpd_conf} -k $ARGV
_________________________________________________

Is there anybody out there that can help me out? I'm totally stumped.

Thanks in advance,

- ryan.

Here's the best advice I can give you.

1) Install EVERYTHING on the SuSE disks. There are things you'll
probably need that are non-obvious to a newbie. Hell, there are
things that are non-obvious to someone who's been doing it for 2
years. If you try to install the absolute minimums, you WILL miss
things that you need.

2) Go to apache.org and php.net. download and install the newest
versions of the software. pay attention to version numbers and
changelog files! The PHP developers can't leave anything alone if it
still works. You'll need to find the correct php module for your
version of apache, and as usual, it is non-obvious.

THEN try it.

Well I am not the expert here, but I went to hotscrips.com and
downloaded a pre-compile apache script that had php and some other
good stuff already in it. It was pretty simple to install and I had it
working in about 45 minutes.
