Default asm reference for 390/z-series machines?

Can anyone tell me where to find an assembler reference and
architectural overview for the IBM s390 and/or z-series machines (and
z/OS, if possible). On the web would be preferable, but I'll buy a
book if need be. I've been googling all over the place but I haven't
found so much as a programming card...

Thanks,
-Dan

Daniel,

If you'll send us your contact informatino (mailing address, etc...)
We'll be happy to send you a Dignus-sponsored copy of the current
z/Archictecture Reference Summary.

You can find the latest copy of the z/Architecture Principles
of Operation at:

http://publibz.boulder.ibm.com/cgi-bin/bookmgr_OS390/BOOKS/DZ9ZR002/CCONTENTS?SHELF=EZ2ZO10B&DN=SA22-7832-02&DT=20030424140649

There is a lot of IBM do***entation on-line. If you go to
http://www.ibm.com and enter "publications" in the search field, you should
get links to the IBM Publications Center plus a lot more. In the
Publications Center I generally use "Search for Publications" to find a
bookshelf. That allows me to then search an entire bookshelf of related
books for terms.

Many divisions also provide do***entation on division-specific sites. For
example, if you go to http://www.ibm.com/printers and scroll down a bit to
the grey Support heading, you will see a link there for manuals. You can
also follow links to specific products for do***entation.

Is that the old 360-/370-line mainframe? I don't keep up with anything if I
can manage. :P

Others have told you where the online versions are.

IBM will sell you the paper version some of these for very reasonable
prices. The -0 version of the z/Architecture Principles of Operation
is over 1000 pages, priced lower than you could print it out on your
laser printer. The -1 and -2 versions are somewhat more expensive.

Check the newsgroup comp.lang.asm370 for discussions about IBM
mainframe architecture and assembler.

Well, that's part of the problem. I looked on the IBM web site and my
best search brought up 1500+ do***ents. None of the first few dozen
are what I'm looking for, and there's no way I can skim through 1500
more. If I knew the name of the do***ent I want, then I could
probably find it. (If anyone knows a title or reference number, just
send it along and I'll be all set.)

The search engines do a little better and narrowing down the search
and offering plausible alternatives, but still no luck.

Well, Dave Rivers post gave a specific link directly to the "z/OS Principles
of Operation". I take it that wasn't what you had in mind?

Try this:
http://ehone.ibm.com/public/applications/publications/cgibin/pbi.cgi?SSN=04CBP0004162126165&FNC=ONL&PBL=GC26-3192-06&TRL=SRH

That will take you to the "HLASM V1R3.0 Bookshelf".

You will get no argument from me that it sometimes requires insider
information or REALLY creative thinking for the search to find some things.
For example, if you are looking for information on the "linkage editor" or
"binder", it is "tricky" to guess that the title you search for is
"DFSMS/MVS V1R4 Program Management
".

To make it clear:

The z/OS Principles of Operation will tell you how the hardware works.

The HLASM manuals describe how the assembler works but give little information
on how the hardware works.
