Default Java Virtual mc Launcher err

Java j2re1.4.204 installed.
I have a mainstream java app, on starting I get a Java Virtual M/C Launcher
, 'fatal exception occured. Program will exit' msg
I can find no err logs. The app icon is shown in the task bar, and it shows
in running processes, but of course I am unable to access the app interface.
How should I track down the err?

try plain Java.exe

If not even that will launch, see the instructions for failed JDK
installs at http://mindprod.com/jgloss/jdk.html#FAILED

Java.exe
A dos window opens, containing data, but shuts immediately - to quick to
read
Presumably it should stay open?

do you know what a DOS box is? I think they call is something like
"command prompt" now.

In Windows 98 it is called command.com, in W2k cmd.exe

Look in start | programs | accessoris | Command Prompt.

It opens a box and you can type commands into it like

java -jar ***x.jar

If you do that then the window HAS to stay open since it does not
belong to Java.

I meant I'm unsure of which java commands /switches to use in order to
diagnose my problem applet,
at the command prompt / dos box.
I have allready run yr wassup applet, and the output appears fine, I think

applet, ..Applet?!?

Why is this the first time you have
mentioned it is an _Applet_? *

What is the URL?

* I re-read your posts and most things
you said implied an *application*, a quite different beastie.

Applets are easier to debug with an URL.
A link to the code would be handy too.

Have a look over this for hints..

I'm not up to speed with java , obviously!, so not sure of difference
between java applet / application.
The link to the java file is
http://12.24.47.40/display/2/articleDirect/index.asp?aid=10469&r=0.4029657
(Silicon Image JavaGUI Raid).
I have emailed SI and got no response, checked FAQ's and help file
This java app***? was running fine, hardware/software hasnt been changed
Have uninstalled / reinstalled
