Default Large file corruption problem (Wraning, long post)

I have a particular problem that I am findin very hard to solve. None
of the comsci types here in cambridge seem to have any idea either.

*Any* large file (above 30odd meg) downloaded to my machine using any
form of file transfer (network transfer, kazaa, ftp, getright and
straight http etc) is corrupted 9 times out of 10. This doe not affect
any of the other machines on my network. Previousl;y when my machine
was hook directly to the internet it still had this problem.

Also on most boots chkdsk runs itself and fixes various security
descriptors, file indexs and so on. This seems to happen for no
apparent reason.

I'm unclear weather this is a problem with windows xp, my hard drive
or some other aspect of my hardware

I have:

Re installed the opertaing system 3 times now.
Tried new network cable/network cards
Run scandisk innumerable times.
Attempted to return the c: drives file system to FAT32 via Partition
magic 8, with no avail due to "Information misatch in directory entry"

I'm stopping sort of formatting the hard drive and 40gb of data is a
rather large amount to back up and I will invariably lose something
important.

Can anyone help? Or know someone that can?
