Default Minix INET vs Minix-vmd INET

Hello,

I am thinking of porting over the 3c905/920 driver from Minix-vmd over to
Minix 2.0.3. Before I start this task, I just want to ask if Minix's
networking layer (INET) behaves the same as Minix-vmd's INET? From what I
have seen of existing network drivers for Minix, I think they are the same.
But I thought I would still ask in case I have missed something.

Thanks,

Alvin

The interface between INET and an ethernet driver should be the same.
The interface between an ethernet driver and other parts of the kernel
may be different though.

Did you try the 3c905/920 driver (in Minix-vmd) on your hardware?

Hi Philip,

questions for your and Kees about a year ago on this? I have some spare
time in the evenings now so I thought I would port the 3c905 driver over to
Minix 2.0.3. My goal is to have one set of source files that compile the
right driver depending no the OS (Minix or Minix-vmd). Also, there are some
bugs and features that I didn't implemented in the Minix-vmd version of the
driver. I am planning on correcting those.

You may want to ask Kees Bot about PCI stuff, etc.

I was thinking about the PCI interface. There are two possibilities:

1. Port the Minix-vmd's PCI routines over to Minix
2. The 3c905 network card offers a means of accessing without using the
PCI routines of an operating system.

Personally, I prefer option #1. I figure this would help advance driver
creation and support for Minix. I'm still doing my feasability assesment
though.

Ssst, don't tell anyone, <http://www.cs.vu.nl/pub/minix/2.0.4/> contains
version 2.0.4. Alas it totally ****s as a distribution, because the
do***entation runs behind the code, but a Minix expert shouldn't have
too much trouble. One of the undo***ented extras is PCI support.

I'm still updating the surrounding fluff, but the floppy sets are
good. Under Minix 2.0.3 replacing /usr/{include,src,man} by SYS.TAZ
and CMD.TAZ, editing <minix/config.h> and typing 'make world' should
work, but I haven't tried it yet.

2.0.4 will be labelled eventually as "mid development expert-only
snapshot". That should be sufficiently discouraging.

Why release when not ready? There's a new Minix project at the VU forking
off from the current code, so it was nice to have a point to fork off from.

Current plans: Try to get a lance driver working for VMWare, fix the
do***entation, release 2.0.5. Postpone getting a life until 2010.

Wow! This is very exciting! So I will do a port using the PCI routines of
2.0.4 but I will also do option #2. Perhaps this will make the driver
compatible with 2.0.3 and 2.0.2 (and maybe 2.0.0). I am hoping to get some
good solid hours for this this weekend.
