I just got my copy of FMP6 and I thought I knew database fairly well (have
used db and paradox, QP as a quasi database)
But I'm totally confused by this scripts thing...seems like really the
program is open (blank) and you
write a script to do what you want....is this correct?
I've ordered a book on filemaker hasn't arrived yet.
I do like the form and table screen look and report print out is exactly the
quality I'm looking for

If you are new to FMP, you will LOVE scripts. Other databases call them
Macros. They allow you to automate one or many requests into a single
keystroke or mouse button click (if you associate the script to a button)

The possibilites are limitless!!!!

Until your book arrives, you might want to take a look at the built-in Help
section to whet your appetite for now!
