Default Newbie question...

I am sure I must be confused but...
can anyone tell me what I need to run the mysql_install_db script on Windows/2000? I have downloaded and installed V4.0. Now I want to initialise the privilege tables and build the test database. But after typing
mysql_install_db
on a DOS-Window in the scripts directory I get the answer that the command doesn't exist or is spelled incorrectly.

Thanks for any hints

Default Newbie question...

MySQL is GREAT on Unix systems! Too bad it blows big time on Windows
environments. I'll clarify so you don't all attack me. Windows users
want a database that when it's time to upgrade the base software, only
requires one click to install or upgrade. Not the MySQL convert this,
change that routine. I would pay for the support option if such an
upgrade was available. I don't have time to waste on frivolous problem
solving. Perfect example: had a 3.2 database, wanted to upgrade to 4.1,
did everything in the upgrade text and the database still wouldn't work.
Restored my backup of 3.2 and it works again!?! And people complain
about Microsoft? Think about it! Other databases (in Windows
Environments) may be slower, but I'll take that over a MySQL upgrade any
day. Just so you don't think I'm totally negative. I have hopes that
MySQL will produce easy to install database engine software some day.
The day they do, I'll dump everything else, use it AND pay for the
support option.

Sorry, old boy, but your post is mostly balderdash.

MySQL doesn't "blow big time" on Windows. It is a breeze to install. The
manual is excellent.

If you couldn't port your code to an upgrade (btw 3.2 is not a recommended
version; 3.23.56 is better), it probably means your code was not well

code for a reasonable fee...

I suppose I could use this assistance as well. I have been running mysql
for some time until recently when it would not
startup. The mysqladmin would load during bootup and suddenly I was
noticing that I could no longer get the service to start.
So, I figured I'd try uninstalling the latest version of mysql 3.xx.yy which
represents whatever is the latest on the web site. Sometimes it
seems that I am to put the my.cnf file in one location while other messages
say put it in another location but have it named
my.ini and I believe that the working setup has my.ini in the windows
directory. Somewhere in the later chapters of mysql weekend
crash course I was reading about the different locations corresponding to
different user privileges and access.

I still have had the installation of Apache on the list of to do things. I
run KWFS web server which allows me to administer the
service using a web based interface. I can set up multiple domains on the
same IP and have each domain point to a different
directory where the web site is hosted. I believe that fits under the topic
of virtual domains in Apache. I'm told on Windows it is simple to
setup and install but that isn't the case so far. I'd like to be running
apache and learning to use it. Start with a basic setup and then
add new features and modules etc. There was one package phpdev that
installed everything as one package and I had
apache running. Unfortunately this installed mysql in a directory under
phpdev instead of where I had been using it
in the root directory. Hence, any application on apache and that setup that
required a mysql database did not work.
So where does one start? I product called NuSphere was recommended but that
is not free unfortunately. I have
the ability to learn but I guess I'm trying to learn 100 things at once from
database applications, mysql, perl, php,
etc. etc. I ended up getting frustrated with apache and mysql recently and
putting them on the back burner. Apache has
been back there longer. So, perhaps I'll pay as well to have someone setup
this.

May I offer some suggestions:
- have only one c:/winnt/my.ini config file
- (uninstall)/ install MySQL as a service - you can then manage it through
the services configuration panel
- forget winmysqladmin
- use DBTools as a GUI (http://www.dbtools.com.br/). If you prefer to use
Access, this is also easy to set up.

You will find it is all very simple.

When you decide to go into deeper details, get yourself the MySQL Paul
DuBois book. Best investment you'll ever make.

As for Apache, I am sure you will google tons of Windows installation
tutorials. It is also quite easy.

I apologize for an error in my post. I meant upgrading from 3.23.54 to
4.0.15a not 4.1 as previously stated.

very quickly, simply and (the best yet) automatically using the upgrade
tools provided, although I am not pleased by it's speed. MySQL beats it
hands down in that department.

SQLite is much quicker then MySQL

able to survive 24h after install? Not even to mention upgrade path (try
e.g. to administer MS SQL 2000, 7.0 and 6.5 from a single workstation).

you'd faced, giving the team a chance to fix.

without hitting a slightest problem; however, perhaps, it might'd been
because I knew the 4.1.0 is an alpha and used it for testing purposes only
(my current working environment is 4.0 (4.0.15a, for now), upgraded from
3.23.54 w/o any probs though; well, maybe it required some five clicks and
maybe some 50 keypresses, not a single click -- under five minutes worktime,
still). Murphy's law, you know...

Default Newbie question...

I have just installed e.1 Alpa on W/2K (fresh install). Now I have the
following questions:
(1) I have managed to start the server as a service (no 01067-error);
but entering "net stop mysql" sends it into shutdown mode but it doesn't
complete (at least not within a quarter of an hour, even though nothing
is active!)
(2) What do I do with all those lovely scripts under Windows?
Are there versions that run on W2K/XP/NT? Maybe I need to get some
software emulating the UNIX shell? Or, do I have to convert them
manually to something executable?
(3) Just moving the unzipped binaries to my "Mysql" directory and then
starting the server etc. (as stated in the README file) shows me that I
don't have the "mysql" database. It supposedly gets set up by one of the
scripts... Where do I go from here?
Please help - regards Heinz Stoellinger
