qnx 6.2.1 install problems on ibm thinkpad 600x

I'm trying to install 6.2.1A on thinkpad 600x but it doesn't get
far before it just hangs. I get
Hit Esc fo
(not `for alternate ...')
Shortly a sequence of dots and a D
Hit Esc fo...................D

then nothing. I can 3-finger, I can Esc, but nothing else appears.
It is a laptop, so only caution `ensure plug and play os is disabled'
doesn't seem to apply.

Anyone have luck with this combination?

Sigh, updating the BIOS didn't fix it and the HDD is not new but
new to me and seems to work fine. But no change.
