Default Slackware 9.0, Coldfusion 4.5.1 Express, and MySQL

Hi,

I am in this ng with some questions about my cf install, and how to
integrate it with mySql. First, some background:

I recently installed Coldfusion 4.5.1 on a Slackware 9.0 machine. I
got this package from cowbox.coe.uky.edu/~stu/cfexpress/ .

From the start, I didn't know whether this was a legal version of
Coldfusion, cause while installing it didn't ask me for any
registration number etc. Also, I would like to know if the CFML
supported by this version is the same as supported by Macromedia
Coldfusion, and whether 4.5.1 CF Express will do most of the things
that the latest macromedia cf does.

I am running MySQL "Ver 12.21 Distrib 4.0.15a, for slackware-linux
(i486)".

My questions are as follows:

1. Can I use MySQL with this version of ColdFusion?
2. If yes, how should I configure MySQL (and CF for that matter) to do
so?

Hope, someone reads this and tries to answer.

I am a complete layman to coldfusion and mysql (and often, to
Slackware too), so please, if you want to help me, please keep it very
very basic

Thanks a lot,
Craig

You are going to miss alot of things in coldfusion mx, however if you
just want to build a basic application you could easily use coldfusion
4.5. Since the 4.5 express version is free you can try it out, and
then download the current version and try it out to see what you like
better. It will probably be MX, however the price tag is steep.

My guess would be you can get MySQL to work with express, since mysql
has ODBC drivers, and basically every other method of connectivity
there is. however I am not really sure how linux supports ODBC, but I
am confident that you could get MySQL to work.

I would recommend that you stay away form coldfusion express 4.5. If
the price of MX is stopping you I would recomment that you take a look
at java application server. Tomcat and JBoss are free and the tag
libraries now availible are comming closer to the ease of coldfusion
each day. You are also not learning an old technology that will not
even transulate to the current version of Coldfusion.

The differences in tags ( not all current tags listed)

Hi Charlie, thanks for the reply. I am able to use MySQL, i think,
because I am able to login as root, or other user ( i created one
called 'web' with GRANT control etc.), but I am not sure if I have
MyODBC on my machine. How do i check for it?

I am not all that knowledgeable on how it works. When I did it I
installed it myself so I know it was installed. However if you post a
similar question to a MySQL newsgroup I am sure you will receive an
answer quickly.
