Default Standard Smalltalk? Newbie question

Welcome to Smalltalk, Glenn! So you've downloade Visual Age, Sqeak and
Visual Works. Dipping into any of the three would make you a better c#
programmer because all Smalltalks are objects "all the way down".

Like Terry I know VisualWorks best. The VisualWorks introduction by Ivan
Tomik really drives that "all objects" point home in the opening
examples -- find it on the Introduction tab of the workspace you see
when you start the NC image.

Smalltalk is a joy, and I never heard of a Smalltalker who voluntarilly
switched to another language. It is interesting to hear your remark
"MS-C# and VB.NET havn't really taken off". Glenn, those of us lucky
enough to program in Smalltalk a long time are by nature contrarians. If
you do what the herd does you'll end up where they are: over a cliff.
But from your perspective what langauge is attracting the masses these days?

Well I suggest you name just one language which has a formal approved
standard and is standardized on this points.

Sorry I can not follow. What do you mean by this?

Friedrich

Why? What has that to do with the problem? It doesn't go away becuase others
did or did not not solve it.

I mean that, from my experience i conclude that knowlede & know how make an
order of magnitude difference in development time, while quality gets
better, not worse.

Greetings,

Henk Verhoeven.

It doesn't matter that you have a formal standard for web or user
interfaces. It does matter however, that the language standard is
sufficient enough that if you created a GUI or a web interface that you
could move this creation from one dialect to another without any serious
porting issues. Ian
