What kind of machine would I need? A real unix post!
Hello,
While I've been using Unix for many years, I've only recently become
interested in actually owning a copy of the software and a machine to run it
on. I have a linux box set up, and bsd is running on another machine, but
I'd really love to run Unix.
My question is this: Can I have just a single machine running, or do I need
a server and workstations/terminals? I went to my local recycled computer
place this weekend and was overwhelmed at the options: the tiny half-shoebox
looking machines, the large pizza-box shaped machines, the midi-towers,
etc...
If I just want to run Unix at home, what's my best option, hardware-wise?
I don't need Solaris 10, though I do dream about 64 Bit Opteron chips. For
my current level, an older version (SunOS 5.9?) would suit me just fine.
Which leads me to my next question... once I get the hardware, where can I
get the software? Any ideas?
Thanks very much in advance!
