Wirth's compiler book in *pdf via linux-ETH-oberon?
from the *pdf. In fact 4 consecutive non ascii bytes, not seen here

I think we are talking about the same book but you have an inferior scanned
copy. The title of the book is 'Compiler Construction' by Niklaus Wirth. The good news is that there is a much better PDF copy publicly available, produced from text, not scanned images. You need to download the official Nov 2005 PDF copy from the ETH website. You'll be pleased to know this is only about 597Kb NOT the 6Mb of the version that you referred to on the ETH mailing list.
