Default Inspiron 8000 OS/2 Install Problem

-> Hi, I have a Del Inspiron 8000 850MHz Pentium III and I want to
-> install OS/2 Warp v4.52 on it. I went to Dr. Martinus' Notebook/2
-> website and found instructions to do so. In the "you'll need these
-> drivers" section it says I must have Dani's 506 driver for the CDRom.
-> I found it on the Hobbes FTP site but I don't know how to get the
-> install CD to use it.
->
-> Here's what happens with just the OS/2 Install CD: The installation
-> begins then the CDR stops with the error message "Unable to enable the
-> CDRom. OS/2 installation is stopped." According to the Notebook/2
-> website this problem is not mentioned. My question then becomes "how
-> do I go beyond this problem?"
->
-> Someone suggested I create a set of install floppies and add Dani's
-> driver. When the install asks to insert the OS/2 Operating System CD
-> the installation will continue. I can't do this because I'd have to
-> swap out the floppy drive and replace it with the CDRom. Under
-> WindowsME I'd have to reboot for the system to re-recognize the swap
-> to CDRom. If I do that (reboot) at the stage when the OS/2
-> installation asks to insert the OS/2 CD OS then I'd wipe out the
-> floppy installation files.
->
-> Can I copy the OS/2 Install CD to my hard drive, add the Dani Driver
-> and burn a new updated OS/2 Install CD? And if so, would the Dani
-> Driver then be able to find my CDRom so I could complete the OS/2
-> installation? Would I have to make any other changes?
->

You can copy DANIS506.ADD to the floppy as IBM1S506.ADD (thus renaming
it as the original IBM driver). Then make sure you have SET
COPYFROMFLOPPY=1 in your config.sys file on the floppy. That will
tell the installer to use the version of the driver from the floppy
instead of the CDROM.

Another alternative is to use UpdCD to build an updated CDROM version,
but I believe that requires OS/2 to use it.
http://xenia.sote.hu/~kadzsol/rexx/sajat/updcd.htm There is an
article on using UpdCD in the VOICE Newsletter -
http://www.os2voice.org/VNL/past_iss...2H/vnewsf4.htm

A third option is to get the latest version of OS/2 which is
installable from a bootable CD. The best version for this is
eComStation - http://www.ecomstation.com otherwise to get it from IBM
requires jumping through many hoops.

Default Inspiron 8000 OS/2 Install Problem

These instructions are great. I don't think this approach will work.
To do this I must insert my floppy disk drive into my single bay,
reboot and begin the process as though I were installing using
floppies. It should eventually ask me to insert the Installation CD.
I can't do that without replacing the floppy drive with the CD drive.
I don't think the laptop will recognize the CD drive with rebooting
because it still believes the Floppy drive is in the bay. I would
have to reboot the system with the CDR in the bay to change that. A
reboot would wipe out all the files placed in memory by the floppy
install. I go in circles.

This sounds promising and I have a machine with OS/2 and a working CDR
on it. I could create an updated OS/2 Warp 4.52 Install CD. I need
to figure out a way for the install process to look for the Dani
driver instead of the IBM driver. If the UpdCD can do that then I
might be able to get OS/2 installed. I wrote to the author who wrote
the instructions for installing on a Dell Inspiron laptop to ask how
he got around but he has never written back.

Thank you for this url. I will go there and see what they offer.

I'll read this article.

I do have the latest version of OS/2 (Warp 4.52 released April 2002)
and I had my friend bring over his release of eComStation v1.1. Both
of these install CDs halted declaring they were unable to read the
CDRom. If the eComStation CD would have worked I would have bought my
own but it didn't. I can't afford to pour a lot of money into this.

Thanks for the help. I didn't think anyone was going to ever write
back!
