Default eiffel envision: bug, question and feature request

[eiffel envision (envfr2003_2.0.1214.0.msi), vstudio .net 2003, windows xp,
updated]

-------

[bug]

scenario is simple:
- create new project (console)
- when project is compiling in the bg. try to run it (CTRL+F5)
- whole ide crashes and exits

---

[question]

is there a way to speed up compilation?

for example when i add white space i have
to recompile whole project (when i'm trying
to run project, message dialog appears:
"These project configuration(s) are out of date:
<Projectname>
Would you like to build them?")

it takes about 12 sec. on pentium 4; 1,5GHz to recompile.

i've heard about some good compilation system in eiffel.. ice-something...
is it enabled?

-------

[feature]

well... there is one, little discomfort
when working with envision for v.studio
developers:

action 'start without debugging' closes
text console after application finishes.

visual studio behaviour for all other
languages is to wait.

-------

ps. is there any bug report/feature request for eiffel?

I am trying to replicate this problem as will get back to you with the
results as soon as I can.

As with most other languages it takes any changes made to the source
text that is part of the project as a change that requires
recompilation. We cannot implement exceptions to this rule as A. The
whitespace could be within "" resulting in the change of a string, or
B. The change could introduce a syntax error in the class and not
alert the user to this, thereby falsely it's integrity for integration
into a shared repository.

We are looking into ways of achieving better performance for Degree 6
as already present in EiffelStudio through its Quick Melt compilation.

Persisting the console in debug mode is a good idea. I will add it to
the list of features for our future releases.

There is a bug report system to allow you to submit any problems you
experience. Could you submit you bug to it? You can find it at
http://support.eiffel.com

Regards,
Paul.

(...)

in debug mode - i agree.
well... microsoft-guys don't. why visual studio defaults are inverted? no
one knows.

submit-form requires submitter-id.
to have submitter-id you need to purchase one of products.
to purchase a product you have to have money.
i don't, to be honest
i'm a student, cannot afford it... huge numbers
(unless you interpret comma in $4,799 as european do

....i have free EiffelStudio version, well... i have had it... until
discovered
it has "super feature" to put "super splash screen" into compiled
executables.

btw. do you actually do know anybody using free version with this "super
cool
feature"? eiffel could be quite good tool i think... eiffel, as compiler.
no splashes, no ide, just plain commad line compiler you can have fun
with/hack in.

do you know if Eiffel Software Inc. can ever release command line sdk,
like microsoft do, for example?

You don't need a submitter ID. You can use 'unknown' - <a
href="http://support.eiffel.com/help.shtml#id">Summitter ID Help</a>

You can use both the free and enterprise version as a command-line
compiler. Use ec.exe located in
<installation_path>\studio\spec\window\bin.
Type ec.exe -help to give you all the options and explainations.

I believe the splash screens are there to permit Eiffel Software to:

1. Make the full IDE available to everyone for free.
2. Protect their interests as a company by ensuring anyone who wishes to use
the IDE for a commercial project, actually pays for the IDE.

I really like the model they've chosen -- it's a win win situation for
everyone, in my opinion.
