BDE speed or alternative DB

Hi,

I'm currently using the BDE within my program, but I'm finding it to be very
slow.

Adding about 16,000 records takes about 35-40 seconds, and a little less to
view them. Is this normal?

Is there a better database I could use that would give me better speed, I'm
only doing basic stuff, and its a local DB with only one user access.
