Default surf as "user", not as root.

Hi!

I don't want to surf as root anymore, although it's working fine.
Which settimgs allow a "user" to Dial in and access Internet?
(currently using modem).

Afaik, dialup connections always have to be established with root
permission, because they alter the routing table (they usually adda
default gateway) and that requires root.

But what's stopping you from making the dialup connection as root and
surfing as a regular user ?

I can use pppd as a normal user, as long as that user is in the 'dialer'
group, and the pppd config files/devices have the appropriate permissions.

Tried to set user in dialer group - not working - and also start kppp with
option run as root - not working. Which files must bechanged resolv.conf?
options? chap-secrets? (i use only pap login) pap-secrets?
Would it help making the whole ppp directory public or is this to
dangerous?
Thank's

The ppp config files you use must be readable by dialer (the group),
obviously. Also, dialer must be able to write to the device of your
modem (/dev/tty00 or /dev/tty01, probably).

I don't know about kppp.

I suggest you read section 11.2.3 in http://netbsd.org/guide/en/, and go
from there.
