Advani confident of Ram temple
By Chandan Nandy The Hindustan Times Friday, July 18, 2003 Gorakhpur, July 17 - Ahead of the BJP's national executive meeting at Raipur, Deputy Prime Minister LK Advani said here on Wednesday he was "convinced that the Ram mandir would be built at the janmasthan". Addressing VHP and BJP workers at this pilgrimage centre, Advani said: "The basis of my optimism has been the interaction that I have had with representatives of both the Hindu and Muslim communities over the past seven to eight months. The desire for the temple at (Ram's) birth place cuts across communities". Asked by reporters later when he thought the temple would come up, the Deputy PM said: "That is something I cannot say. But it should happen through talks." Advani's statement here is in contrast to the message that he had sent out to the Sangh Parivar, especially the RSS and the VHP, at Nagpur on Sunday when he had urged the two organisations to eschew "narrow Hindutva" and "be more pragmatic" in their approach. He had also ruled out the possibility of the government considering any legislation for construction of the proposed temple. Earlier on board the special IAF aircraft en route to Gorakhnath, Advani "hoped" the Hurriyat Conference and other separatist groups in Jammu and Kashmir would "respond" to the talks offer of the Centre and its interlocutor N.N.Vohra. He also said the government was considering a legislation to check population growth. The proposed law would bar people with two or more children to contest elections in the future. It would apply to politicians seeking election and to government employees in the states and the Centre alike. Advani said the issue would be discussed with all political parties to evolve a consensus.
