joke, and may have even thought it was original. Its antiquity is

I'm pretty sure I saw it in a non-comptar-netwerk-context at one of those
nerdy gifted and talented retreats that I went to in the 80s (during my
grade school years). We were put in teams and went around the gym,
spending maybe 30 seconds each at about 15 different stations. Each
station had a sign with pictures or words, and we had to guess what word
or phrase was being represented. ADVthanksANCE was one station, a picture
of two dice (pair-of-dice => paradise) was another, etc. Presumably this
was some form of SAT prep.

My recollection is, as a very incredibly nerdy pre-****, I saw
"ADVthanksANCE" in "Games" magazine. It was part of a collection of the
sorts of things you described. Which probably have an official term,
like "homonym" or "word radishes". By the time I came to ARK, on or
near the Eternal September, ADthanksVANCE was being used relatively
often and it reminded me of the specific word puzzles from "Games".
I have all the issues of "Games" from 1982-1990. But I'm not going to
look this up. I will just say that I won a "Games" t-shirt because I am
a super genius, and you must believe everything I say.

I saw them called "square puzzles", but I think that "word radishes" is a
fine name and I intend to use it in hopes that it catches on.

I used to do them, as a very incredibly nerdy pre-****, on bus trips in
England. These bus rides which were all very boring after you got used to
the thrill of driving on the wrong side of the road, except for the one
where a bird - a large-ish one, something like a Canadian goose - flew into
the front windshield, utterly destroying it (the windshield, and the bird).
