About refilling the churches

George Washington stamped himself on our nation. His memory is everywhere.
Washington Streets grace hundreds of towns and cities. The highest place
around here is Mount Washington. Washington is both a state and our nation¹s
capital district. His portrait is in everyone¹s wallet. Where can we turn in
the United States and not meet the memory of the man who gave us our
liberty?

Jesus Christ fills the church. He is with every believer. This is the single
most important fact for the created universe. The fullness of deity dwells
in Christ and Christ dwells in all those who are his. In 1970, I attended my
first state conference meeting of our denomination. After two days, the name
of Christ was spoken only once that I remember. What happened when his name
was spoken is etched in my memory. A resolution was before the delegates
that would substitute trust in the government for trust in the Lord. A woman
went to the microphone to challenge the resolution. ³What does Jesus Christ
think of our trusting the arm of man instead of trusting him?² was her
question. The delegates laughed her to scorn. They sneered at the mention of
the name of the savior.

That smear happened thirty years ago. Much has changed. Congregation after
congregation has returned to Christ. Are we on the threshold of a third
great awakening? Congregationalists brought the knowledge of the cross to
these shores. Is the Spirit of God refilling the churches with the presence
of the Lord?
