According to something published by newWitch magazine a chain store that
has a theme that they would fit in has banned them due to pressor from
the religious right.

You can read the article below:

http://www.newwitch.com/pressrelease/hottopic.html

If this is so I am guessing that they took aim at Hot Topic because of
it being geared for young women. How long before such tactics spread
to say Books-A-Million or the like? And I am sure that such
machinations are underway even as I type.

Hmm, I wonder if anyone more local to them than me has hit upon the idea of
suggesting to the management of Hot Topic that they tell the representatives
of the religious right who made the protest in no uncertain terms to (a)
grow up, (b) mind their own business and, ideally (c) **** off.

Hardly PC, and definitely not profoundly spiritual, but deeply satisfying
nevertheless.

What I don't get is why a store that, from what little I know about
them, has a large number of regular customers from the goth community
would give in to a bunch of middle-aged white guys who would not set
foot in the place in the first place.

They won't let their daughters go there? Like they would tell them if
they did in the first place.
"Oh my GOD! you mean that people who never come in here in the first
place will start to think badly of us and not come in? Let's be sure to
spit in the eye of our real customer base for sure!"

A company that gutless deserves to fail.

"On the other hand, it's not like fundies would ever shop there to start
with, so pure numbers say if they have business sense, they'll tell the
nosy non-clientele to go play in traffic in favor of the people who
actually shop there."

Perhaps they have the goal of becoming Pat Robertson's crews one stop
for fishnet hose and purple lipstick and don't want to mess that up.

The plopping sound you just heard was my eyeballs hitting my desk as I clawed them
out with my own fingers. Unfortunately the images go on....

Terry McCombs (magentashadow@webtv.net) writes:

Hardly. As the editor of newWitch's sister publication, The Blessed Bee, I
am aware that newWitch has been highly successful; it sells well.

However, its nature is a bit "in your face" so I presume it seeks out
"Hot" news on the controversial side. I can't speak for the editor, and
haven't asked him about it. Dagonet Dewr is nW's editor, and he had his
wife, Cecylyna, run the Pagan Pride Project website (http://www.paganpride.org).

As a Canadian living in Ottawa -- which for Canada, is a large city -- I
am somewhat distanced from the impact of the "Religious Reich" (witty
words, Songweaver) in the U.S.A. Our culture here is very multicultural,
and freedom of religion is in our Charter of Human Rights. However, we do
have Fundies, too, but their attempts at censoring work better in smaller
towns, I suppose.

I do agree, that we should "choose our battles well." Some goth store
chain (that I've never heard of) hardly needs media attention, IMHO.

Blessings, Lauren
