You mean like an air cooled 2-stroke VW?

Mass isn't everything. The -OH in ethanol causes it to have a higher
boiling point lower evaporation rate then it would normally have
because the moulicule is polorised. Interesting meany race cars run
on methanol, anouther fermintation product.

Default going around in circles (energy case time way process)

[sic--i.e. neutral?]

Burning naturally-occurring fuel, such as forest debris, is
carbon-neutral.

Burning an agricultural crop is not. Lots of energy is invested in the
mechanical process of planting of harvesting--this is all done with
fossil fuel. More hydrocarbons are typically used in fertilizer. Still
more in processing, especially in the case of methanol (is that where
the discussion started? It's been a long time).

So you're burning two or three or more cycles of carbon consumption
before you even get to the fuel.

Besides, I was about to ask, is it really ethical to burn food crops
for fuel, when people are going hungry in much of the world? But I
won't-- that's a can of worms I'd rather not open. ;-)

Following intense negotiations with a potato,
I respond to Alan Young who opined that:

I was also going to add (and I shall do so now!! Grin) that the
particulate matter in the smoke is also often an environmental
problem. It not only tends to bring on asthma attacks in humans
(rather like pollen can) but it also tends to clog up pores (or
stomata) in OTHER lifeforms, both plant and animal.

Default going around in circles (energy air subject don)

Following intense negotiations with a potato,

I thought (and am subject to correction) that the old Beetles were
four-stroke engines, even though air-cooled. I know that VW/Porsche/
whoever else also make/made diesel engines, but I don't know that any
of them got into the Bugs.

Anybody got anything definitive?

True, and even a 2-stroke engine has a great many moving parts
(crankshaft, two pistons, rods, valves, cam...I'm not a mechanic, so I
don't really know, but it's a lot).

However, there was indeed an engine with just one moving part!

Default going around in circles (energy space)

<space>

America today -=pays=- American farmers to NOT grow corn,
so burning it is hardly worse...

I used to worry about this -so- much, that one day as a
little kid (5 ?), I tried to mail my peas and mash potatoes to
Africa....

You should have seen the face of the mail man, when he
came walking up to the house with a soggy cardboard box
in his hand...

I think my great grandmother quit laughing, eventually...

a decade later, or so...
