Default LAN3, White Courtesy Telephone please!

I am eagerly awaiting your review of "Master and Commander/The Far
Side of the World," which I saw this afternoon with Himself. Since I
know this sort of thing is your sort of thing, I cannot wait to read
your take on the fillum. Please to be quick about it! And thank you.

Indeed. I still have borderline sensual dreams about their seafood
chowdah and the asiago-crusted sole. And if you're not a fish guy,
Vlad claims their rack of lamb (not for fnarring) is as good as any
he's had elsewhere in the world.

And it does, my brother. It does indeed. You will be thrilled to the
tips of your naturally Titian hair.

Is that the doctor? If so, his ******** motivation for fighting
Napoleon is beside the point in the movie, since they focus on his
complex friendship with Aubrey.

Himself is a huge fan of the books, and pronounced himself completely
happy and satisfied with the fillum. As pour moi, I was likewise
amazed and delighted and impressed--- spending the entire time staring
wide-eyed at the screen and less bothered than usual about the display
of poor dental hygiene. There is even mention of pirates!

I await without, sirrah!

PS: First snow of the season yesterday afternoon, and second snow this
morning (Sat) No ac***ulation, just gentle flakery.

Yeah, since it was like the least liberal liberal magazine in the
world, for one thing.

For the record, I am sorry that my liberalism made Stephen Glass into a
Sith Lord, and henceforth promise to promote the standards of
intellectual honesty and decency at least on par with John Derbyshire's
work for The National Review. IA CTHULHU FTAGN JENNA BUSH HAS THE TAINT.

Yaay, we've got another one! John Ashcroft will be congratulating you
via the speaker in your microwave oven.

As a matter of fact, I've never read a New Republic, so I don't know
where they sit, but I had to guess based on the movie. I read enough of
Andrew Sullivan to know that Derbyshire's nobody I want to line up
behind. Most I knew about Stephen Glass is that he claimed to be a
telephone psychic on TAL and told a rather depressing story about those
whom who allegedly spoke to, on a episode that will never air again
because he's a damned dirty ape^W^Wliar. Based on that, though, I can
tell you that Hayden Christensen did a good jorb.

Thanks for the recommendation: they didn't have asiago-crusted sole, by
they had the next best thing: asiago-parmesan halibut cheeks, which were
excellent. Also chilean sea bass which was mouth-melting-good (Dad had
that) and a great huge pr0k-loin which was as big as my mother (who had
that).

Starter: Baker's Bourbon, neat, slightly cut.
Appetizer: macadamia-encrusted brie with bread
Salad: Caesar, with baked parmesan wafer thingie. (Mom's mixed green
salad came with spring rolls and Macadamia Brittle, mmm.)
Course: Asiago-Parmesan-encrusted halibut cheeks with yukon gold mashed
potatoes, and slightly overcooked broccoli.
Dessert: Banana Spring Rolls with almond flakes and a mixture of caramel
and roasted macadamias.
Finish: Sambuca Romana (in a snifter, and not in flames as in "The
Flaming Hooker," which is the choice flaming beverage of mustachioed US
Navy aviators, I'm told, yet it did have the traditional 3 coffee
beans).

I forgot the name of the wine already, sorry. Tasty white that my dad
said would sometimes push $11 in stores.

The thing about _Master and Commander_, the first novel in the series,
was that by all appearances it was not meant as the start of the series
when written, and so Maturin (indeed, the Doctor) was merely a doctor,
notably exceptional as a ship's surgeon only because he was actually
competent. Later novels revealed his sideline as an Catalan landowner
and English spy who loathes tyranny and is addicted to laudinum. Like
Sir Joseph [Blaine?], the head of the English Secret Service, Maturin is
a naturalist with strong ties to the Royal Society, so frequently enough
they would pass messages in boxes of beetles or avian bones. But quite
a number of the books gave Maturin little enough to engage in the
intelligence trade. (Maturin was a man of principle and never took a
ha'penny for his service.)

I consider that high praise from both of you!

Looks like I'll be seeing in on Monday (17th) with Dad at the Cinerama--
I'd better buy advance tix tomorrow. But right now I'm late for a
drinking engagement in the U.Dist. (The Ave has been renovated and
nearly looks tolerable-- you should see it.)

Gentle flakery. You should probably add a joke about your NoSco
neighbors.

Humbly submitted,

Ahhhh God--- I am choking back sobs of remembrance.

Splendid summation--- I gained 3 knowledge points!

Kindly favour me with an email of your eventual review? I am leaving
on Monday evening for an unexpected trip to Vancouver, where I shall
be incommunicado for the duration. And no, I won't be coming down to
Seattle, as I shall be alone and in service to a dear and dying
friend. My heart is breaking for her already. She's only 38.

As with so many things, I wish I had thought of that!

You're a gem, young Nick.

Over the past couple of years they've been very hawkish bordering on
neoconservative in matters of foreign policy. They're swinging back
now, sort of, as Iraq goes fubar, but they still seem to possess a
mixture of conventional-wisdom centrism and unclassifiable quirkiness
(it's impossible to predict what crazy-ass thing Gregg Easterbrook is
going to say next). Unfortunately, as a person who doesn't subscribe
to political magazines, I have an imperfect view of their current
activity since so much of their web site is now subscriber-only.

The one I've come closest to actually springing for is the Atlantic,
which seems to consistently print fascinating and usually non-stupid
stuff all across the opinion spectrum... but they give a lot of it away
on the web, too.

(On the other hand, the Atlantic did give a heck of a lot of space to
raving nutbar Nick Cook and his claims that the Nazis discovered secret
laws of physics unknown to everyone else and the US Air Force used them
to make the B2's secret antigravity engine.)
