Two Products (discussion)
On 23 Jun 2003, IknowHimDoYou held forth thus:
There are, in fact, many kinds of human on this Earth. Here, though,
only two are of interest to us. One kind is able to make an intelligent
and reasoned choice to worship or not worship one or more gods, and to
reconcile this choice, regardless, with an open-mindedness, an ability to
question, and an ability to respect the belief systems and life choices
of others.
The other kind of human that concerns us here is the kind who, for
whatever reason, find themselves possessed of a belief so utterly
inflexible and all-consuming that they cannot for one moment conceive of
the notion that any other belief system can warrant any respect at all,
and instead must offered only cheap mockery.
How CAN we tell the difference? Generally, the first type is able to
carry on a conversation offering as much respect to those who do NOT
share their own viewpoint as with those who do. The second type, on the
other hand, genuinely see no need to do this, and consider respect for
other views a sign of weakness or foolishness.
So next time you run into some of these 'type two' individuals, save your
breath. Their spiritual tunnel-vision will ensure that they never see
your point of view. Their hands-over-ears "la la la i'm not listening"
approach to discussion and conversation will guarantee that they do not
hear your opinions. And their utter and absolute obsession with their
own life and their own importance means that your point of view, and your
opinions, are of less than no value to them in any case.
