So, what motivated so many people to exposure the frauds and trickeries of
the self-styled "Pastor" Chas. T. Russell, founder of the Watchtower (which
in turn spawned those criminal Jehovah's Witnesses who come banging at your
door at all hours, uninvited, threatening the lives of your kids and loved
ones with their message:
"Now you've heard our message, you MUST join our crap book peddling org and
give us all your time and money and sacrifice your happiness and sanity, OR
ELSE our leader will swoop down tomorrow and SLAUGHTER YOU AND YOUR KIDS."
For that is the JW message in a nutshell.

What motivated so many principled people to speak out against Russell is
that the man was a disgraceful FRAUDSTER and CHARLATAN, whose gift was the
ability to WRITE and WRITE and WRITE so much that his semi literate
followers were conned into believing he really had something worth
imparting (he did not).

While they believed, he greatly enriched himself, defrauded his wife out of
most of her alimony, indulged in preposterous lawsuits, perjured himself in
court, seduced young girls in his care (a secretary Rose Ball, whom he
packed off to Australia days before a lawsuit so that she could not give
evidence, and a housemaid), and cheated hordes of people of their savings..

Why else did ALL his lawsuits for LIBEL fail?

His present-day apologists, both Bible Students and JWs, have all sorts of
fanciful explanations for everything. They have had nearly one hundred
years to perfect these excuses - the fact remains, the man was a FRAUDSTER.

Charles C. Cook was a man of great substance. Why did Russell not sue him
for libel for publishing these four tracts which showed Russell at best to
be a liar and a criminal fraud and at worst a filthy pedophile (and a liar
and fraudster)?

Russell didn't, because the accusations were true AND the publisher could
prove it. Russell didn't have the guts to name Charles Cook EVEN ONCE in
the 14 million words that Russell penned (Russell mentioned other
detractors, including Rev. Ross, but never Cook - this is because Cook
would have willingly SUED RUSSELL FOR LIBEL IF HE HAD).

Sometimes you can learn as much from what does not happen as from what
does.... ;-)

This, however, does not at all reflect the teachings of Charles Taze Russell.


They didn't.

PASTOR RUSSELL EXONERATED IN
SEVERAL COURTS

Shortly after the trial of the above case the Washington Post
published aforementioned "jelly-fish" story in connection with the
name of Pastor Russell, and charged that he was guilty of immoral
conduct. Thereupon Pastor Russell filed suit for libel against the
Post, which case was tried before a jury. The instructions of the
court on behalf of the defendant, the Post, were manifestly
erroneous and prejudicial, but notwithstanding this the jury brought
in a verdict exonerating Pastor Russell, but allowed him only one
dollar damages.

Pastor Russell thereupon appealed to the Superior Court, which
court reversed the judgment of the lower court and remanded the
case for retrial, that a jury might have opportunity to assess larger
damages. The case came on for trial the second time and after
plaintiff had put in a portion of his testimony counsel for the
Washington Post offered a compromise and the case was settled by
the defendant, the Washington Post, paying to Pastor Russell a
substantial sum of money, together with all costs in the case, and
the Post thereafter published his sermons.

Thus he was completely exonerated by two different courts
concerning the "jelly-fish" or immoral story.

Still his enemies persisted in trying to get this before the public. A
preacher in New Jersey wrote an article to a Chicago paper, the
Mission Friend, charging Pastor Russell with immorality, and as
proof thereof cited the Miss Ball or "jelly-fish" story. Thereupon an
action of libel for damages was filed by Pastor Russell's counsel
against the Mission Friend. The case came on for hearing, and after
argument of the legal questions involved the Court decided in favor
of Pastor Russell. The only question that remained to determine
was the amount of damages to be allowed Pastor Russell.
Counsel for the Mission Friend then sought a compromise or
settlement. Pastor Russell not desiring "blood money," but merely
that his good name might be vindicated, agreed to the compromise
upon the following terms, which were carried out, to wit:

The Mission Friend paid all the costs and published a retraction
admitting that it had wrongfully published the Miss Ball or "jelly-fish"
story concerning Pastor Russell, further stating that Pastor
Russell is a Christian and a gentleman of the highest integrity and
moral standing and entitled to the respect and esteem of all good
people.
