Many of us ship our snakes via these services covertly, and a group of us
have got together in order to change it. The response has been great, although I know we can do better. I know that I average over 1400 unique hits per day on my site alone ( http://www.fieldherpers.com ), yet only 943 have signed the petition at http://www.petitiononline.com/harmless/petition.html that I authored along with the users at faunaclassifieds. This petition is a very important step for those who breed, or plan to breed, snakes as a hobby or business. Basically, the intent of the petition is to get shipping companies to treat harmless snakes the same way they treet other reptiles and amphibians. Did you know you can ship a 4' alligator via the US postal Service, but can't ship a hatchling corn snake? Although the petition is mainly in regards to snakes, it can be applied to all reptiles and amphibians. If companies are willing to admit that they do not apply the same standards across the board for snakes, then it can be shown that it applies to other herps as well. I understand the petition is strongly worded, but that is necessary in this day and age in order to garner the actual attention it deserved if it was Please take the time to read and sign the petition. I believe this could be one of the roadblocks to making captive propogation over collection a valid endeavor. -Christian Reynolds Owner, www.Fieldherpers.com |
