Neutering (iguana)
Hi,
I can only speak to my experience. I think there are some others out
there who have had similar results as me. Ivan is probably around 3
years old. He has been with me for a year now. I had him neutered as
soon as I adopted him. He never got a chance to go into a breeding
season. And so far he hasn't had any aggression issues. Now, I am
not a fan of unnecessary surgery, but I felt like you - I didn't want
a big lizzard who I was afraid of. So several people told me that
there is a theory that if you neuter them before they ever go into
season, then you nip the problem in the bud before it becomes an
issue. (No pun intended). That was what I hoped the case would be.
Ivan was neutered September a year ago, and so far - no orange, no
attitude (other than his general attitude), no seminal plugs, no
breeding attitudes, nothing. Now he could have very well been the
submissive type of male iguana anyway, but I am inclined to think not
- because he certainly tries to think he is an alpha ig. His foster
mom who had him before me, found seminal plugs when he was only a few
months old. So we expected that this past year would be an
interesting season - but with the neuter he has been wonderful.
