The article is in French, which is a language that I've heard, but know very little about. But here's what I think I've figured out: The lizard was discovered in Dec. of 2003 on a small island near New Caledonia, perhaps during a survey of the marine reptiles of said country? The animal is about 50 cm long (TL) and is believed to be nocturnal. It also has long teeth that also do something else...and it is believed to have been a super-predator, or something. I also think the article said that only one other has ever been found, in 1870. And something about the rediscovery of this skink being a message of hope for people fighting to conserve biodiversity. Or at least, that's what my 5 years of Spanish classes tell me the article says. Any Francophones around here? -Z |

I think you pretty much got it Z. Heres a tentative translation from
www.freetranslation.com The Scinque terrifying Bocourt rediscovered in Communicated New calédonie of press - March 3 2004 Ivan Ineich Inquiring to the Department of Systematic and Evolution (UMS 602 Taxonomie and collections) national Museum natural d'Histoire Member of the Group overseas of the French Committee for l'UICN C'est during dune mission devoted to l'étude of the sea snakes again calédonie, on a small îlot to the wide one of l'îleCapture a lézard of big size in December 2003. Phoboscincus bocourti is the scientific name of this Scincidae. L'animal, measuring close to 50 length cm total, was photographed and filmed before liberated d'être. Before this rediscovered one, this reptile n'était known that by a unique copy collected by Junior Balansa about 1870 and that served to describe l'espèce in 1876. This spécimen, holotype of l' espèce, is deposited in the collections of the Paris Museum and his comparable size to the one of the observed spécimen in 2003. This type of big size was considered as extinguished and l'absence d'observation since his supposed description to be linked to a life method night. This animal of big size possesses long teeth, bend and cutting, c'est without any doubt a fearsome great-predator of lézards and probably d'oiseaux. The rediscovered one of this lézard of big size on a tiny îlot nevertheless prospected by many specialists of the reptiles is a true message d'espoir for the persons that fight to preserve the biodiversity of the groups d'outre-sea. Ivan INEICH thinks that several other considered types as extinguished in the world always are present in their natural habitat but that certain methods of special lives (arboricolie, fossorialité, .) do not allow observing them that during very brief and exceptional periods.
