Re the last post. I have the 'best' connection number for WebTv in
this area, the one with the least users.

It's just me and half.com, that's all.

And EBay seems to be hiccuping a little too.

Lucky I've spent a lifetime developing the collections I most wanted;
I have more than enough to live with, if I lived twice my remaining
lifetime.

Still not over that Grammy wake, pardon my glumness. There's
something about drinking Merlot out of a dead man's shoe.

You simply insert the max. amount of money you're willing to spend, no
matter how cheap the product is at the moment. E-bay updates the offers
automatically, in steps of 0.50 Euro/Dollars each. By that way you don't
need to stay there and insert continuously new imports, e-bay does it for
you until the countdown is finished. If there was someone who entered a
higher amount, he'll buy, if not it's yours. At least that's how it works in
Europe, but it should be the same everywhere.

Connection speed has a lot to do with it. And after some practice you learn
how many seconds to give yourself before you hit the last bid.

Yep, but you bid that max amount like 30 seconds more or less before the bid
ends, depending on your connection speed.

I just remembered I've actually had the same thing happen at half.com last
year. I was trying to buy some audio equipment for my husband, and the site
wouldn't take my credit card. The same day I bought video games for my son,
and it took the same card. I called them three times and got a different
line of bullshit each time. Finally they told me that they don't take cards
from out-of-country banks, which mine was NOT. I finally gave up, emailed
the guy who was selling the item, he withdrew it from half.com and I bought
it directly from him.

Actually, what you're probably seeing is someone using a sniping
service. "Sniping" is the word for bidding at the last minute to
prevent the other bidder from bidding again. There are online sniping
services that use computers to submit a bid at literally the last
second. I've never used one because I hate sniping. I'll bid on the
last day then do like Dr. Barbara and watch and wait at the end.

I generally type it some hours before. If it's the max I want to spend it
doesn't matter if I bid earlyer or later.
