Default Charleys water dish (tortoise)

You can put slate or big flat stones or even carpet around the water dish so
that not so much substrate is pulled into the water dish when the tortoise
walks into the pan. I water my plants with the water in the dish...taking
poop out of course....I just dump it into my big mother-in-laws tongue or
g**** ivy or whatever. kathie

Subject: [RussianTortoise] Charley's water dish

One more question. Charley really does a number on her water dish. She
goes in and out,
and before long it looks like a swamp, with soil, sand and timothy hay.
It's not an easy thing
to deal with, and Charley's owner needs easy things to deal with. I take
the thing, decant the
liquid into my toilet and throw the solid contents outside, but Charley's
family lives on the
fifth floor of an apt building. We neither of us have a utility sink, only
a kitchen sink and a
bathroom sink. Her dish is the drip pan (?) from a flower pot, large enough
for her to get
completely in.

How do you all deal with your tort water dishes?

Any ideas on Charley's situation?

Thanks,
Lainey

Hi Lainey, I usually put flat stones or pieces of tile around the water dish. It helps a little.

Get used to it, Torts aren't the most intelligent creatures in the
world. What I tend to do is to put very little water into a pan or
dish. Just enough that it does not dry up during the day. And at night
I just pour that water back into the substrate unless there is poop or
urates in it. Usually my substrate drys out really fast, this way it
keeps it moist a bit longer.
