You can get Borax 'natural laundry booster' in the detergent section
of your local supermarket.

I first started using it years ago when a friend recommended it for
flea control, sprinkled on carpet and then vacuumed up. Works great.

Or, try Diatomaceous Earth if you haven't already.

Default GRITS kill FIRE ANTS (gecko)

Give the boric acid recipe a try & let us know how it works. My only
concern is you are probably going to need a lot of it. The fire ant
mounds you see are only a fraction of your total infestation. During
the recent drought here in Texas, many thought the fire ants were
dying out. Well the ants just stayed underground where they had the
humidity they need for their nests. After a few rains you can see
dozens of mounds in the typical lawn.

Here in the DFW area I am blessed with both fire ants & pharoah
ants! The fire ants try to claim everything outside & the pharoah
ants try to claim everything inside. Both are introduced pests doing
their best to take over the world. I prefer another introduced
animal now common in this area - the Turkish gecko. At least they
eat bugs & fill a niche not obviously filled by natives.

On a different note - I've lived in TX most of my life & don't
remember eating grits till I was a young adult. Maybe my parents
gave up trying to get me to eat that incredibly bland substance at
an early age! I Remember "hearing" about calf fries also but never
had the pleasure...

Another good source of information on fire ants can be found at
http://uts.cc.utexas.edu/~gilbert/research/fireants/faqans.html#which

Although this article is aimed at a Texas audience, most of the info
applies to fire ants everywhere.

I note that the article mentions that a nest may actually go down
several feet - explaining why the boiling water method only kills
the ants near the surface. Also feeding tunnels may extend out from
the mound 100 ft!

Good luck!

Bill

This sounds strangely similar to the "rice at weddings" myth

The "real" reason rice was discontinued at weddings...
Too many liability, "deep pocket" law suits related to wedding guests
slipping and rolling on rice on concrete sidewalks... Church insurance
companies long ago revoked policies to cover such "damage..."
