Peninsula Cooter Question (turtle)
Yes, but a well-fed Peninsula Cooter grows very quickly, and they will quite
large--far larger than 8 inches. In fact, an adult's shells can reach up to
about twice that, and a 16 inch turtle in a 50 gallon tank wouldn't work
well at all. I personally doubt they could survive north of Florida for two
reasons. One, if they could, why have they not spread further north? Two,
I'm not sure they hibernate.
I grew up on a house whose lawn sat between a lake and a swamp in central
Florida, and we saw turtles swimming about at all times of the year, though
on the coldest days (you know, the ones where the high never makes it above
60) we didn't see any. We had quite a few Peninsula Cooters around and we
kept several as a pets for while. None of them ever hibernated, remaining
as active as the temperature allowed.
Perhaps there is a local aquarium or living museum who might be interested
in taking it?
