Default Calling All Helper with Military or NonMilitary Help (tortoise)

FedEx may not ship tortoises. DHL, if it's available where you are,
is a better bet. Double check to see how long the package will be
in transit. Ship on a Monday or Tuesday only. The tortoise would
be better off going with you, if the airline or military "hop"
allows it.

You might have to get export/import paperwork from USFW.

My tort is an African Spurred Tort and he is under one years of age I believe and about 4 inches i could not tell you for sure right now since my lovely husband has taken my messuring devices once again. haha gotta love them Marines

I was drafted before ( dont ask me which country), and i understand what you mean by "if you have been in the military when you have to pick up and move you have to go quick in some cases"

keeping a pet when you are a military man is a burden at times. I think you will have to fredex overnight to some home in US. Collect it when you are back. Do a search, on how to pack your tort.

But would you mind if i ask what breed, size, age of your tort?

Well it seems that our time here on Okinawa Japan as part of the Marine Corps may be cut shorter than we expected. My problem is my tort. Should he fly with me on the plane and if so how do I keep him warm enough for the long 14 hour flight? Or should I have him Fedex overnight to a home in the states that will be ready for him to live in until we arrive? Please give me any and all ideas quickly because if you have been in the military when you have to pick up and move you have to go quick in some cases. I await to hear anything!!!!

Sincerely,

p.s. please email me out of group if you would like.

We have both fedex and dhl here but since we are moving for the military my kitty cat and my big dog that flew over here are flying back with me. The cat and dog go under the plane for their trip since they are really big but my tort can ( so far that i know of) fly back with me inside the plane. I am willing to fly him back with me but how I am to keep him warm for that long of a plane ride. What should I use and where do I get it? I am heading out today to find any and all information that I can on this but I am looking for any and all help regarding this from all of you guys and girls
Thanks,
Sunny

Are instant chemical heat packs available for purchase there? You can buy
them in drug stores in the states. If you don't know what they are, I can
explain. Each one lasts several hours. You could buy enough to last the
whole trip, replacing as they wear off. Is your tort small enough to fit
into a foam cooler? That would provide insulation.

Hi,

I have also seen chemical heat packs on ebay for
reptiles. I bought a bunch from our local sporting
goods store- hunters use them in their gloves and
boots- in case of power outage. Val

They should sell heat packs on-post. At your local
AAFES(army) or whatever they call it. I'm in the
military myself and I'm not sure how I'm going to send
from Germany. But try the sporting goods section.
Its hard to tell what will be stressful for them.
And good luck.

A word of warning with these heat packs -- while it would be highly
unusual for it to happen, it is wise to remember that these work by
reacting with Oxygen in the air. If the animal being shipped is in a
tightly sealed box it is possible for the Oxygen to be used up in the box
