Ornate Box Turtle questions
I work at a pet store. Apparently some customer had an ornate box turtle they could no longer take care of and gave it to the store to adopt out to a good home. None of my coworkers wanted it so I ended up adopting it. Didn't really know anything about turtles really but it needed a good home.
He's doing great. Has a healthy appetite. He gets box turtle pellets, dark leafy greens, melon, slugs and snails and whatever insects he comes across when he forages or that wanders into his little area.
I have him in one of those kiddie wadding pools with about 3 or 4 inches of coconut mulch bedding. I keep it moderately moist. He's got a large water bowl for soaking and drinking though I have never seen him soak but I have found his poop in it so he must use it to soak some times. And he has a hollowed out log to hide in. And this setup is kept inside my greenhouse where I grow orchids. He is taken out regularly to scoot around the yard and forage. Supervised of course. He seems quite happy doing quite well.
In looking around on the internet for more specific information on their care and such, I find some pretty conflicting things. Like how moist I should keep the bedding.
And I read that they should not be kept with other turtles but then I also read that people keep them with other turtles even other types of turtles. Even tortoises.
So would he be happier with a companion turtle and what kind of turtles can I put with a male ornate turtle?
Thanks for any help and information you can give me!
